Results of the study on Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change in Metropolitan Arequipa
The objective of the study "Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change in Metropolitan Arequipa" is to identify measures for adaptation to climate change in the metropolitan area of Arequipa, based on a vulnerability analysis carried out in the city, which incuudes environmental, economic, territorial, and social dimensions, as well as a sectorial analysis with an urban approach in four prioritized areas.
Based on the multiple threats faced by the city of Arequipa, in Peru, CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, in coordination with the COPASA Special Project of the Regional Government of Arequipa invites to the presentation of the results of the study "Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change in Metropolitan Arequipa", executed by the consulting company Libelula, Management in Climate Change and Communication.
The study states that the main problems faced by the city of Arequipa in the face of climate change are: inadequate response capacity in case of heavy rains; inadequate availability of water resources; pressure over the Chili river resulting from urbanization; and potential effects of heat islands resulting from a deficit of green areas and loss of countryside in Arequipa.
The analysis of the vulnerability analysis will be presented jointly with 12 adaptation measures that were identified and prioritized, seeking to reduce the city's vulnerability in the face of climate change, which would imply an investment of over USD 230 million.
This meeting will be a meeting space for key actors to exchange ideas regarding the implementation of the adaptation measures proposed for the city of Arequipa. Participants will include the Regional Governor of Arequipa, representatives of the Ministry of the Environment of Peru, representatives of the Mayor's office, district mayors of the jurisdiction, representatives from governmental entities of the region, and the private sector, among others.
