The genesis of the SDGs: Redefining development
In this panel, the authors of the book "Redefining the development: the extraordinary genesis of the Goals of Sustainable Development", will share revealing data on the origin, advances and challenges of the SDGs in different multilateral and negotiation scenarios. The former presidents Martín Torrijos and José María Aznar will participate.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) transformed the development agenda, moving from a narrow and isolated set of objectives that should be fulfilled exclusively by countries in development, to a dynamic, inclusive and universal framework. They generated an integrated view of the world, addressing in an integral way all the dimensions of development. This story will be shared by Paula Caballero and Patti Londoño, authors of the book "Redefiniendo el desarrollo: la extraordinary génesis de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sustenible", which will be presented during our meeting "Many voices, una region: Latin America and the Caribbean working on the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development".
Thanks to this event, in which ex-presidents Juan Manuel Santos (Colombia) and José María Aznar (Spain) will also participate, we will have the opportunity to learn from a rich primary source about the remarkable journey of the SDGs concept, its acceptance, the Rio+20 process in 2012 and its integration into the real negotiation process. In conclusion, we will have access to a rich treasure of negotiation documents, rarely available to the general public.
To this date, the Sustainable Development Goals are the backbone of the international development agenda with a broad acceptance, by the public and private sectors both nationally and worldwide. In this sense, we have a vital role in accelerating results through strategic funding of the efforts of multiple stakeholders who work together to implement the SDGs in an integrated and interrelated manner.
