Launch of Guide for Healthier Cities
This CAF Guide makes available to the cities of Latin America and the Caribbean conceptual frameworks, recommendations, and practical examples for a healthier life in cities based on joint work between the urban planning and health agenda at the municipal level, in accordance with the best practices available in the international arena.
The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic revealed important challenges facing our cities and highlighted some priorities that should be part of the Latin American and Caribbean urban agenda for the coming years. COVID-19 had a special incidence on the population with pre-existing diseases, generating enormous pressure on health systems and causing thousands of deaths, especially in the most populated cities and with less access to basic services in the region. Many of these diseases could surely have been prevented through public policies and urban environments that promote healthy lifestyles, in harmony with the rest of society and with the environment.
Facing this need to promote a healthier life, this guide arises, which makes an important commitment to the union of urban planning and health and nutrition agendas. Each separate agenda generates instruments and policies to do so, but working together fosters a synergy that can multiply those effects and generate longer-term and far-reaching results.
