2016 Latin American Telecommunications Congress: future regulation for the digital ecosystem

This meeting, for the discussion of ICT public policies in Latin America, will help share and analyze best practices and solutions that strengthen the development of telecommunications, promote investments, and advance toward the objective of making all Latin Americans become a part of the Connected Society, with all the implications this has for the social and economic development of the region

This meeting is an opportunity to encourage dialogue toward a common agenda that enables the closing of the digital gap, and opens roads toward the construction of a single digital market in Latin America. 

The future regulation of the digital ecosysten is one of the key subjects of the event, at a time when the pace of regulatory changes has not achieved the speed of the changes in the digital world. Other subjects to be addressed in the meeting include investments in infrastructure, the opportunity that the telecommunications industry provides to the socio-economic development of the region, and the challenges of the digital economy in the configuration of a regional market of digital goods and services. 

The meeting, which will take place between June 20th and 23th in Cancun (Mexico), will include the participation of authorities, executives, international experts, ministers, regulators, congress representatives, academics, and representatives of companies of the telecommunications ecosystem of Latin America. Their participation is distributed in the following sessions:  

  • Plenary Session of the 2016 Latin American Telecommunications Congress (Monday June 20th and Tuesday 21st)
  • CE-Digital Workshop: Competition Policies in the Digital Era (Wednesday, June 22nd)
  • CAF Workshop: Connectivity and Single Digital Market in Latin America (Wednesday, June 22nd)
  • Mexico Seminar: "Balance de la reforma de telecomunicaciones en México" (Balance of the Telecommunications Reform in Mexico) (Wednesday, June 22nd) 
  • Annual Conference CPR Latam: the interdisciplinary network of research centers brings together the most important ICT academics of the region with regulators and the industry (Wednesday June 22nd, and Thursday 23rd).  

Among the organizations that will participate are the Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones de México (IFT) (Federal Institute of Telecommunications of Mexico), Latin America & Caribbean Network Information Centre (LACNIC), Internet Society (ISOC), and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)   

This meeting was organized by the Unión Internacional de Telecomunicaciones (UIT) (International Telecommunications Union), CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, GSMA (Global association of all the mobile ecosystem), the Inter-American Association of Telecommunications Companies (ASIET, for its acronym in Spanish), and the Secretariat for Communications and Transportation of Mexico
