CAF Supports Colombia0s AI Experts Mission
December 10, 2021
Colombia receives support from CAF—Development Bank of Latin America—for implementation of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Experts Mission.
This is an unprecedented and pioneering mission in Latin America. Its role will be to establish a prospective roadmap for the implementation of the government’s AI policy, based on a comprehensive and technical vision from a group of renowned international experts. The mission leader will be Sandra Cortesi, a fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center. This expert mission is also supported by the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank.
Since 2019, CAF has supported the Colombian government in several AI policy implementation development initiatives, through technical assistance and specialized knowledge. These include notably the creation of the Ethical Artificial Intelligence Framework.
The objective of this ethical framework is to mitigate the risks and maximize the opportunities for AI in the country and thereby prioritize the responsible implementation of AI projects in the public sector. This has arisen as a result of discussions with various economic sectors and was developed with the support of CAF and other institutions.
In addition to these specific aids to the Colombian government CAF, held the “ExperiencIA: Data and artificial intelligence in the public sector” event, together with Telefónica, Microsoft and the Colombian Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It presented the global and regional panorama for the strategic use of AI in the public sector, the opportunities and challenges for the responsible use of this technology, as well as practical lessons learned from case studies. The regional report, which was launched on that occasion, highlights Colombia’s experience in articulating its AI strategy. In 2021, CAF also joined fAIrLAC, a regional alliance for the ethical and responsible use of technology.
