GIZ grants CAF funds in the amount of EUR 779,130 to improve urban mobility

With the aim of continuing to strengthen their collaboration, the German agency GIZ and CAF have signed a technical assistance contract through which GIZ grants funds to CAF to implement a program for improving the region’s urban mobility.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (abbreviated BIZ in German) has commissioned the GIZ to grant non-reimbursable funds to CAF. The aim is to implement a program that promotes the use of data from non-traditional sources for urban mobility planning (contributing to the reduction of emissions), and that makes cities more inclusive, sustainable and habitable.
The program hopes to improve sustainable mobility through machine learning. This will require, among other actions, setting up a mobility data center, collecting and analyzing data for the development of public policies, and researching more uses of innovative data sources. This project is directly related to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, titled “sustainable cities and communities”, and is aligned with CAF’s strategic orientation.
“This agreement reflects CAF’s interest in promoting the procurement of resources that allow technological innovation that improves urban mobility and benefits the Latin American and Caribbean population, allowing us to play an important catalytic role in helping the region’s countries migrate towards economies that are low in greenhouse gas emissions,” said Gabriel Felpeto, CAF’s Vice President of Finance and CFO.
Antonio Silveira, CAF’s Vice President of Infrastructure, stated that “the agreement with GIZ will promote sustainable development based on innovation, knowledge and investment. The funds will also support the modernization of urban mobility planning and management, through the use of satellite technology and new image and data integration technologies.”
Insa Illgen, director of the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) project at GIZ noted: “This new agreement with CAF is yet another example of us strengthening the collaboration we have forged together. We are convinced that sustainable mobility is key to ensuring that the SDGs are met, just as the 1.5 degree target set by the COP was. This new focus on digital data for urban mobility will be our joint contribution to cities wishing to transform their mobility landscape. We hope to bring forward-looking technologies to cities around the world and are pleased to be working with CAF’s urban mobility initiative.”
The relationship between GIZ and CAF in the region has gone from strength to strength in recent years. In 2019, both organizations signed a grant of EUR 187,473 for a successfully implemented gender-inclusive transport program. In 2020, another agreement was signed in the amount of EUR 548,548.00 for the devising of post-COVID-19 measures to facilitate economic reactivation. With the recent funds just granted, a total of EUR 1.5 million has been mobilized in the last 3 years for the benefit of the region.
