CAF and UNICEF hold workshop to deepen their relationship for the benefit of children in the region

July 10, 2024

The meeting serves as a prelude to the signing of a second MOU between the bank and the agency, through which CAF consolidates its commitment to children's welfare.

CAF – the development bank of Latin America and the Caribbean – held a workshop in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund - UNICEF LACRO (Latin America and Caribbean Regional Office) to deepen the strategic alliance between both organizations. This will materialize through a more comprehensive second Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which intends to cover various sectors of action.

With the in-person participation of UNICEF LACRO Regional Director, Karin Hulshof; Manager of Social and Human Development, Pablo Bartol; and CAF's representative in Panama, Lucía Meza, along with 25 specialists from various technical teams of both organizations, both in the room and virtually, the workshop addressed action lines in sectors such as education, health, nutrition, early childhood, WASH, and climate change. The goal of the workshop was to develop an agenda, a work plan, and joint actions, and establish the collaborative framework between UNICEF LACRO, and CAF for the elaboration of the new joint MOU.

The activity served as an opportunity to think strategically and in the long term about where the added value of the alliance lies for CAF and UNICEF LACRO. The workshop concluded with drafting a proposed text for the MOU and identifying concrete activities for building a joint Work Plan. The technical teams of both parties estimate that the new MOU could be signed in the context of the next UN-CAF meeting.

In addition to the MOU signed in 2019, in February of this year, CAF and UNICEF LACRO signed a technical assistance agreement with the main objective of supporting the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES) in implementing the Early Childhood Public Policy in Panama.
