3 keys to show the city with a videoclip

Before going out to report, two strategies may be adopted: have it all planned, or allow ourselves to be surprised

Caio Cavechini is a journalist and documentary maker. Editor and reporter at TV Globo, and one of the teachers in the Audiovisual Journalism Workshop held by the Fundación Gabriel García Márquez para el Nuevo Periodismo, CAF, and the  Universidad Casa Grande.

During the workshop, he shared with the journalists some of the secrets of going out into the streets to report. Among them, three keys:  

  • Before reporting, it is always good to know the story you want to tell. Even when the story is known, the video reporter may choose from two equally valid options: one, have it all prepared and researched before going out into the street. The other, let yourself be surprised. 
  • Cities are cold, it is the people who provide warmth. For this reason, it is important to represent the city through people. The human factor helps the people who watch our reports feel identified. 
  • Cities have many stories. The challenge is to identify the main story and the satellite stories. A good editor knows how to contribute to the narration of the report by connecting the stories. 

The workshop brought together 11 video journalists of Latin America with Brazilian journalists Caco Barcellos and Caio Cavenchini. For five days, they worked to develop the different phases in the production of an audiovisual report, regarding the stories of daily life in the city of Guayaquil. The resulting reports may be seen in the workshop's.
