Considered as the longest and most modern tunnels in the country, since 2008 the San Eduardo tunnels have become an important road artery which contributes to the improvement of traffic conditions in the city's road network.
The project, executed by the Municipality of Guayaquil, is part of theSistema Integrado de Transporte Masivo Urbano de Pasajeros(Integrated System for Mass Urban Transportation) (Metrovia), and constitutes one of the works of the Regulatory Plan for Urban Development, which defines urban expansion and its development toward the different areas of the city.
The San Eduardo tunnels connect the urban districts of Febres and Tarqui, which are densely populated, allowing for an ease of congestion in the roads of the North, Northeast, and Southwest areas of the city during peak hours, where they endure a traffic of approximately 4,500 vehicles.
Jorge Berrezueta Peñaherrera, Director of Public Works in the Municipality of Guayaquil, points out that a transport interchange will also be constructed as part of the project, located at kilometer 4.5 of the road to the coast, which connects the tunnels with the Martha Bucarin, Carlos Julio Arosemena and El Bombero avenues, (Northeast sector) and with the Barcelona Avenue (Southwest).
In addition to reducing the travelling time for the inhabitants, the project has contributed to the improvement of basic services as a result of the rehabilitation of the existing infrastructure, the revaluation of the area's land, and the establishment of propitious conditions for a reduction of accidents.
CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, as a strategic partner, finances USD 35 million for this work, considering that the level of infrastructure in a territory is closely associated to the development of society.
