Bolivia: Over US$1.6 million for 13 projects

In this operation the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) approved technical cooperation for the private sector for over US$1.6 million, which was used to start a series of projects

1. Beneficiary: Club de Madrid.

Project name: Leadership, consensus building and constitutional development in Bolivia.

Purpose: Assist the government with the design, organization and implementation of the process of political consensus building to strengthen the base of inclusive and sustainable representative democratic government in Bolivia, based on international experiences. The assistance will be provided by members of the Club including international political leaders, respected former presidents. The Club’s current head is former Brazilian President Fernando Enrique Cardoso.

2. Beneficiary: Cinemateca Boliviana

Project name: Studies for the Basic Sustainability of the New Cinemateca.

Purpose: Creation of a cinematographic and audiovisual distribution company in the country, as alternative business, design of strategies and actions to manage resources for completing the new infrastructure, and strengthening actions and strategies to create a profitable, viable and self-sustaining institution.

3. Beneficiary: Santa Cruz Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Services and Tourism (CAINCO).

Project name: XV International Business Round Bolivia 2005 and VI Economic Forum.

Purpose: Sponsorship of both events

4. Beneficiary: Tiwanaku, Viacha and Taraco Municipalities.

Project name: Culture for Development

Purpose: The Culture for Development project started its activities in February 2004. The project to develop tourist attractions in the region has financing from CAF, Ministry of Economic Development through FAST, the company Sociedad Boliviana de Cemento, and the Viacha and Tiwanaku municipalities. Activities start with the Taraco peninsula.

5. Beneficiary: Santa Cruz Chamber of Industry, Commerce, Services and Tourism (CAINCO).

Project name: Support Program for Competitiveness, Cost Bolivia, Second Phase.

Purpose: Develop competitiveness in Bolivia through implementation of indicators and setting up of institutions to measure, propose, monitor and seek solutions each year for the factors that affect the cost of doing business and the investment climate in the country.

6. Beneficiary: Prisma Comunicaciones S.R.L (Grupo Nueva Economía).

Project name: Entrepreneurial Ideas Competition, Second Version.

Purpose: Train university teachers and potential entrepreneurs in the preparation of ideas and business plans as part of the implementation of the "Entrepreneurial Ideas 2005" competition, and strengthen the preincubation network.

7. Beneficiary: Compañía de Productos de Camélidos S.A. (COPROCA) and High Andes Camel Breeders Association (AIGACAA)

Project name: Suppliers development program

Executing agency: FUNDES Bolivia

Purpose: Design and implement a Supplier Development Program to contribute to raising the standards of quality, productivity and management of the suppliers of COPROCA.

8. Beneficiary: Bolivian National Confederation of Original Indigenous Nations and its Amauta Agricultural Council (CONNIOB).

Project name: Pilot project to control erosion, degradation and desertification with recovery of cultivable soils in selected areas in three subtropical and tropical areas.

Purpose: Recover and conserve cultivable soils, prevent erosion, degradation and desertification. In the pilot project, 500 hectares of agricultural soils of varied fertility will be planted with "kudzú" (pueraria phaseloides) legumes, which add nitrogen to the soils, conserve humidity, produce and conserve biomass, and permanently control weeds through coverage.

9. Beneficiary: El Alto Municipality

Project name: Purchase piano for Municipal Arts School.

Purpose: Donation of a piano to benefit 400 students in the music school, who will be able to take classes with two students at the piano every hour. The project supports diffusion and promotion of cultural activities in the municipality, offering concerts to the public.

10 and 11. Beneficiary: Idea Foundation / Universidad del Valle (UNIVALLE).

Project name: “Leaders for the Transformation Program" and "Governance and Political Management Program" respectively.

Purpose: Strengthen democratic governance in the region. In the four versions held so far in Bolivia in eight of the nine departments, 550 people were trained including mayors, councilors, chairmen of vigilance committees, departmental councilors, municipal technical teams, and leaders of organizations involved with municipalities.

12. Beneficiary: Foundation for Production FUNDA-PRO.

Project name: Revolving line of credit.

Purpose: Support for training of human resources in priority areas for the country, directly financing students for Master’s, technical specializations, the last two undergraduate years and thesis preparation.

13. Beneficiary: Foundation for Production FUNDA-PRO.

Project name: Positioning and Familiarization with the Education Financing Program.

Purpose: The main purpose is to implement a Marketing, Positioning and Familiarization strategy with the FUNDA-PRO program to expand the coverage and scope of financing for advanced training.
