CAF approves USD 219 million to improve the comprehensive management of water in Argentina

CAF will finance two water projects in order to ensure the provision of potable water in the Province of Buenos Aires, and to moderate the effect of the floods of the Lujan River

CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, approved today two loans for the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, for a total of USD 219 million, with the objective of financing projects that contribute to improve the supply of potable water and the prevention of the effects of the floods in the basin of the Lujan River.  

Enrique García, CAF's Executive President, stated, "These loans join the efforts of the Argentinean government to achieve an efficient management of the water resources that promotes productivity, guarantees safe access to potable water and sanitation for all citizens, and includes prevention and adaptation measures in the face of extreme climate events such as floods". 

A first financing of USD 119 million is aimed at the construction of a purification plant to address the demand for potable water, and will contribute to improve the efficiency of the provision systems in La Plata, Ensenada, and Berisso, in the province of Buenos Aires. The project, which will be executed by the Under-secretariat of Finance of the Ministry of Economy of the province of Buenos Aires, includes the installation of pump stations and lines of conduction, as well as intermediate regulation tanks and distribution channels for treated waters. 

At the same time, another loan was approved for USD 100 million for the development of a project to prevent the rise, manage the flow in a controlled manner, and moderate the effect of the floods in the basin of the Lujan River in order to benefit 10 areas of the Province of Buenos Aires. The initiative includes the implementation of the first stage of the Plan for the Comprehensive Management of the Basin of the Lujan River, includes works and studies aimed at increasing the conduction capacity of the riverbed  through an increase of its section and the expansion of bridges in several tranches of the lower and medium part of the basin.
