CAF carries out its first international seminar in Cuba

Experts from the region and Cuba, called by CAF and the Universidad de La Habana, will meet in that city to reflect about the challenges of development in Latin America and the Caribbean

Organized by CAF, Development Bank of Latin America and the Universidad de La Habana, the international seminar "Opportunities and challenges for economic development in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place on April 28th. The objective of the event is to analyze and exchange points of view regarding the main trends of the global economic and financial scenarios, the structural challenges of the region, the opportunities of the Cuban economy in the framework of the modernization of its model, and the prospects for regional integration. The event will include the presentation of works and CAF's comprehensive agenda and its contributions to sustainable development and Latin America's integration. 

The seminar will be an opportunity to get together a group of renowned Latin American academics, personalities linked to regional development policies, as well as important representatives from the Cuban public and academic sectors. The main speaker in the event will be Enrique Iglesias, former IDB President, former Secretary General of the SEGIB, and former Secretary General of ECLAC, who will offer his reflections regarding the current status and prospects of the world economy. 

Enrique Garcia, CAF´s Executive President, highlighted the relevance of this first meeting both for CAF and for Cuba, as it ratifies the Institution's commitment to contribute to the generation of valuable spaces for reflection, and knowledge regarding the main topics for the region's economic and development debate, as well as its genuine interest in strengthening its ties with Cuba. He stated, "I am certain that this will be an opportunity which will not only contribute to the debate regarding the challenges faced by Latin America and the Caribbean in the future, but it will also enable advancement and the opening of spaces for a comprehensive relationship between CAF and Cuba, creating close ties for joint work". 

Among the panelists, the international seminar will include: Enrique Garcia, CAF's Executive President; Gustavo Cobreiro, President of the Universidad de La Habana; Mario Bergara, President of the Central Bank of Uruguay;  Alicia Barcena, Executive Secretary at ECLAC; Pablo Spiller, Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkely;  Jose Antonio Ocampo, Professor at the University of Columbia and former Minister of Finance of Colombia; Augusto de la Torre, Chief Economist for Latin America at the World Bank; Guillermo Perry, Professor at the Universidad de los Andes and former Minister of Finance of Colombia; Alberto Trejos, Profesor at INCAE in Costa Rica; Silvia Odriozola, Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the Universidad de La Habana; Vilma Hidalgo, Vice-President of the Universidad de La Habana ad Professor in the Faculty of Economics; Antonio Romero, Professor of the Centro de Investigaciones de la Economía Internacional (Research Center for International Economics) ; and Juan Triana, Professor of the Centro de Estudios de la Economía Cubana (CEEC) (Center for Cuban Economic Studies); among others.
