The agreements, which Mr. García signed with Venezuela's Sports Vice Minister Yuri Quiñones and FVA Secretary General Marcos Oviedo, will help develop the CAF Caracas Marathon, as well as improve its quality and institutional framework, turning it into a major sports event with Latin American and global significance. They also spell out a commitment to study cooperation in the fields of human and social development through sports in Venezuela.
Mr. García said the CAF Caracas Marathon is part of the activities carried out by the bank under its comprehensive agenda for human development in the region. "For us, sports is a valuable tool for inclusive, human and social development," he said. "The CAF Marathon has been made possible thanks to the unconditional support of the National Sports Institute, the Sports Ministry, the Interior and Justice Ministry and the various municipal governments, as well as the private companies that also have joined us."
More than 7,200 runners from 30 countries and every Venezuelan state will participate in the CAF Caracas Marathon on Feb. 24. It is the only maratón in Venezuela that is certified by the international athletics federation (IAAF) and the Asssociation of International Marathons (AIMS).
The course that runners will encounter in the CAFCaracas Marathon 2013 is identical to the course followed in the two previous editions. It runs through the municipalities of of Baruta, Caracas, Chacao and Sucre.
The International Athletics Federation has designated the CAF Caracas Marathon a qualifier for the World Athletics Championships in Moscow in August and the Bolivarian Games in Trujillo in November. For a third year in a row, the FVA has also named it Venezuela's National Marathon Championship.
