The objective of the technical cooperation is to convert the solid residues comprehensive system of Santa Cruz into an international model that contributes to the sustainability of the Galapagos Islands
September 06, 2015
CAF, Development Bank of Latin America and the Decentralized Autonomous Municipal Government of Santa Cruz, signed a technical cooperation agreement to allow for the implementation of a project to strengthen the comprehensive management system for the canton's solid residues.
Bernardo Requena, CAF's Director Representative in Ecuador, highlighted the importance of this cooperation as the Galapagos are a World Heritage Site, declared by UNESCO. In this respect, he highlighted that the implementation of an improved system for the management of solid residues is essential for Santa Cruz and the other islands of the Archipelago.
For Leopoldo Bucheli, Mayor of the GAD of Santa Cruz, the funds from this agreement will finance a study to strenghten the management of solid residues, which will be implemented once the results of the study are known.
Mario Piu, Environmental Management Director of the Municipal GAD, subscribed the agreement as a representative of Mayor Leopoldo Bucheli, and highlighted the importance of strengthening the current management system that includes separation at the source, collection, and treatment of organic residues, recyclable, and non-recyclable.
The cooperation will suggest techniques and methodologies for the management system of residues that are friendlier to the Archipelago's environment. Among the expected results are: the development of a diagnosis of the current situation of the residues in Santa Cruz, the development of an updated management plan for residues, and final studies to improve efficiency and coverage of the comprehensive system for solid residues.
It should be noted that the project is focused on improving the management system for solid residues, together with developing a strong campaign to minimize consumption, which should have a positive impact on the project's sustainability.
