(Lima, February 8, 2011).- CAF President & CEO Enrique Garcia and Defense Minister Jaime Thorne signed a US$500,000 non-reimbursable technical cooperation agreement to support the project "Humanitarian Demining on the border between Peru and Ecuador."

The purpose of the agreement is to take action against antipersonnel mines in the northern border region of Peru in an effort to promote security and development.

After the signing, García said CAF supported such initiatives considering that humanitarian demining contributes to sustainable productive and social development, and improves the quality of life of people threatened by the existence of anti-personnel mines and their economic and social integration and reintegration.

Under the agreement, the Peruvian Army General Division for Humanitarian Demining is the unit responsible for carrying out the humanitarian demining operations, in coordination with the Defense Ministry Representative to the Peruvian Center for Action against Antipersonnel Mines (Contraminas) and the Contraminas Technical Secretariat.

Peru and Ecuador, in addition to being State Parties to the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty, signed the Peru-Ecuador Expanded Agreement on Border Integration, Development and Neighborly Relations in Brasilia in 1998.
