The Montevideo Metropolitan Area will have better road connections thanks to a loan of USD 80 million that the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) granted the National Development Corporation (CND). The program consists of building, repairing and maintaining 42 kilometers of roads, distributed over 28 priority projects as part of the Montevideo Metropolitan Works Plan.
The National Development Corporation, through its trustee, CONAFIN AFISA, will be responsible for managing and implementing the financial aspects of the program. The Metropolitan Government of Montevideo will be responsible for supervising the work from a technical standpoint.
This program complements investment made by the local government so that the people of Montevideo have the infrastructure they need to get around the city, an aspect that has been fully evaluated through an origin-use survey financed by CAF with non-reimbursable funds.
"With these initiatives, CAF is increasing its technical and financial support for cities facing the challenge of adapting urban infrastructure to their demographic dynamism. We are partnering with Montevideo to provide the population with a quality road infrastructure as well as inclusive, clean, sustainable and safe way of moving around the city," said CAF's Executive President, Luis Carranza.
The program's objective is to improve traffic conditions, ensuring connectivity and safe travel in the Montevideo Metropolitan Area, while improving connections with the national highway network.
Specifically, the work includes: road widening, geometric corrections, and repairing and improving paving on a number of selected roads given priority because of their impact on the movement of the Montevideo population.
