To support the Government of Peru, CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, and the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM, for its acronym in Spanish) signed a technical cooperation agreement that will help develop activities to strengthen the negotiation capacities during the twentieth Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change-COP20 (for its acronym in Spanish) to beheld in Lima from December 1st to 12th.
"The Presidency of the COP20 faces the challenge of creating an environment of trust and finding and solving obstacles, as this road continues in Paris during 2015 when the climate agreement is finally signed. CAF's support shows that it is an entity that recognizes the importance of the climate debate, which encourages us to keep working" stated Manual Pulgar-Vidal, Minister of the Environment.
At the same time, Eleonora Silva Pardo, CAF's Director Representative in Peru, highlighted that the Institution participates in diverse global fora as an entity that generates research and dissemination of knowledge regarding development and environmental sustainability issues. In addition, she pointed out that this alliance includes contributions from 17 professionals specialized in multilateral matters, as well as the realization of consultation meetings regarding negotiations, called by the Peruvian presidency.
Silva Pardo commented, "We understand the importance of the COP20 in Lima, and we wish Peru to have the place it deserves after achieving productive negotiations for the world, and receiving more than 12 thousand people at home".
With CAF's support, the links with the social movements or private sectors that have a large influence in the international process will consolidate, creating adequate spaces for dialogue, thus contributing to the COP20 process.
Silva Pardo highlighted, "This technical cooperation agreement materializes the contribution that CAF will grant Peru, who will exercise the presidency of the COP20 with the mandate of leading the negotiations process tending to reach agreements in the sphere of the United Nations for the reduction of green house gasses".
The Conferences of the Parties (COP, for its acronym in Spanish) are international meetings where progress in terms of climate change is evaluated, new approaches are addressed, and a series of intermediate negotiations between working and study groups are held to facilitate and inform these processes.
