El Cronista, O Globo, Istoé Dinheiro and El Financiero, winners of the 2nd edition of the IE BUSINESS SCHOOL Prize for Economic Journalism in Latin America

  • Argentinian business daily El CRONISTA wins the prize for the best article in the daily press category with an article headed Conquistar la base de la pirámide (Conquering the base of the pyramid) by journalist Maria Gabriela Ensinck.
  • Brazilian daily O GLOBO, based in Rio de Janeiro, is the runner up in the Daily Press category with A nova economía das favelas (The new shanty town economy) by prestigious economic journalist Miriam Leitão, together with Valeria Maniero.
  • Brazil’s ISTOÉ DINHEIRO, an economic magazine from São Paulo, receives the prize for the best article in the non-daily press category with O país das start-ups (Country of start-ups) by journalist Bruno Galo.
  • Costa Rica’s EL FINANCIERO is the runner up in the non-daily press category with Sortear un camino lleno de piedras (Negotiating a rocky path) by journalist Ana Cristina Camacho.
  • Peru’s EL COMERCIO and SOY ENTREPRENEUR (Mexican edition), receive the special prize for daily and non-daily press for economic coverage and promotion of entrepreneurialism.

Madrid, 21 May, 2012. Conquistar la base de la pirámide (Conquering the base of the pyramid) authored by journalist Maria Gabriela Ensinck and published by Argentinian daily EL CRONISTA has been awarded the IE Business School Prize for Economic Journalism as the best article in the daily press category. The article focuses on how gaps in the market and innovation can afford opportunities to work on businesses aimed at the most disadvantaged members of the Latin American population, combining solidarity with bottom-line results.

The best article in the non-daily press category has gone to O país das start-ups (The country of start-ups) by journalist Bruno Galo, and published in Brazilian magazine ISTOÉ DINHEIRO. The article explains how Brazil’s technology market is managing to attract entrepreneurs and talent in the field of technology from all over the world, a trend which went unnoticed for many decades.

The judges panel of the second edition of the IE Business School Prize for Economic Journalism in Latin America is made up of executives from the companies involved in organizing the competition: IE BUSINESS SCHOOL, CAF and the CODERE Foundation, together with key players from the world of journalism and communication, from publications that include Clarín, CNN, Wall Street Journal, GDA and Miami Herald, and representatives of firms that include IBERIA and GOOGLE, as well as regional institutions like OAS (Organization of American States).

The judges panel also recognized the work of economic journalists Miriam Leitão and Valeria Maniero, who authored A nova economía das favelas (A new shanty town economy), published in Brazilian daily O GLOBO, and an article headed Sortear un camino lleno de piedras (Negotiating a rocky road) by journalist Ana Cristina Camacho, published in Costa’s Rica’s EL FINANCIERO, which received prizes as runners up in the daily press and non-daily press categories, respectively.

SPECIAL MENTIONS FOR EL COMERCIO and SOY ENTREPRENEUR

The organizers of the competition gave a special mention to the work of two communication media for their work on promoting economic and entrepreneurial culture in Latin America.

Peru’s EL COMERCIO, in the daily press category, received the special mention for its work in the field of general press. The Lima-based paper currently publishes three economic sections (PORTAFOLIO, MI EMPRESA and DIA 1) on a weekly basis, each with a different focus, as well as an extensive economy section on a daily basis. This unique approach fosters economic and social development in Peru.

The Mexican edition of SOY ENTREPRENEUR, also received a special mention for its constant promotion and innovative approach to entrepreneurialism, and its commitment to social and innovative economic projects, with a pleasant and easy style that reaches many levels of society thanks to the detailed and practical information it provides.

310 ARTICLES

Entries included more than 310 articles, reports, interviews and other formats, from over 180 communication media, signed by some 145 leading economic journalists in Latin America. Prizes totalled 13,000 Euros (approximately $17,000) and entries were received from professionals from all over Latin America.
