LatinFinance, leading Latin American publication in financial and investment information, conferred its prestigious Man of the Year 2005 on CAF President & CEO Enrique Garcia in a ceremony held in New York City, United States.
The award is one of the most important in the region and has previously gone to personalities such as Luis Ignacio -Lula- Da Silva, Vicente Fox, Ernesto Zedillo, and others.
As LatinFinance editor John Barham explained in an article published in 2004, "CAF achieved record approvals, outstanding disbursements and issues on the capital market and obtained its highest income to date, marking the pace for years of future growth. Because of the role that Garcia has played in creating this bank, he is LatinFinance’s Man of the Year 2005."
The CAF president is portrayed by the publication in its March 2005 issue as a leader whose vision has transformed the institution from a little known regional development bank to one of the world’s best and most respected multilateral organizations.
LatinFinance describes the qualities of Garcia’s management as a combination of "personal charm, imagination, managerial strength and a deep understanding of regional potential." Adding that "his capacity to persuade others has led to the growth of the base of the institution beyond the Andean borders. Today CAF member countries cross the Caribbean, Central America, Latin America and - now - Europe, since Spain recently became a member."
In 2003 LatinFinance magazine chose CAF for its award for Best Development Bank of the Year in recognition of the soundness and prestige of the institution.
