Governance program launched in Peru

Andean Development Corporation President Enrique García launched yesterday the governance program in Peru, in the facilities of the Catholic Pontifical University of Peru (PUCP), in the presence of George Washington University representative Steven Biget, and PUCP Rector Salomón Lerner Febres.

According to information from the multilateral organization, "CAF is convinced that the consolidation of competitive market economies cannot move forward if the appropriate state institutions are not generated."

Enrique García said that the inclusion of governance strengthening in the Corporation´s field of action was the result of an invitation to well known politicians and intellectuals to evaluate the situation in the region after the economic and political changes of the last 20 years. "This is why we have included activities aimed at strengthening governance and democratic institutions in our action strategies," he added.

The CAF has defined four priority working areas:

• Ethics and transparency

• Institutional strengthening

• Decentralization and citizen participation

• Leadership for transformation

After beginning in Bolivia in 2001, the program has been such a success that it was expanded to other Andean countries to achieve the participation of all the actors and leaders of civil society, with their support teams in the municipalities. So far the program has been held in Bolivia and Ecuador and will begin this year in Colombia, Peru and Venezuela.

Forming leaders

In the conviction that the future challenges that Latin America faces in a globalized world require a new type of leadership, the CAF has given priority in its governance program to train youth in vision of country and democratic values. The objective is to identify potential leaders and provide them, through training, with tools to assume the responsibilities of leadership in the future with ethical values and a deep civic and democratic sense.
