“Ibero-America: Governance and Communication" to be presented today in CAF headquarters

October 07, 1997

The result of a substantial exchange of opinions and experiences by communicators, journalists and others at a seminar held last year in Santiago, Chile – during the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government – the book “Ibero-America: Governance and Communication" was launched, which contains the presentations and recommendations of the forum.

The important event was attended by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Burelli Rivas who presented the book, and other high-level figures from the world of politics, the economy and diplomacy.

The book launch took place a few weeks before the holding of the II Presidential Summit on Margarita Island, prior to which a new forum will be held with representatives of the media, communicators and academics, with the theme: ethics, democracy and the media.

Both forums have been organized by the Ibero-American Center for Communication and Social Studies (CICES) – based in Bolivia – and the Association of European Journalists (AEJ), based in Spain, with CAF sponsorship, in the interests of forging links to strengthen the Ibero-American Community of Nations and its democratic institutions.

Before the Summit, the Margarita forum will examine – among other aspects – social responsibility, individual ethics and the media; power and its relations with the press; the media’s contribution to strengthening democracy; communication strategies and spreading ethical values, as well as the administration of justice and human rights.

The forum will alos review the Ibero-American Summits and their future, and reflect on the role of the media and the Ibero-American community.

Governance and Communication In the prologue to the book, CAF President & CEO Enrique García says that in the innumerable strategies adopted by the countries of Ibero-America to achieve sustainable development and participate more competitively in the new world economic order, integration is the path that builds greatest consensus and is now in fact the center of government agendas.

Although negative actions can occur in this process of change, the solution to these problems requires innovative responses which make the process governable and facilitate the inclusion of political, economic and social changes in terms of efficiency, without violating the peace or interests of the actors and beneficiaries of these benefits, he added.

CAF, international financial organization whose mission is to support the sustainable development of its member countries and regional integration, backs the processes of change, convinced that they need to be based on strengthening democracy and its institutions.
