Latin America's emerging middle class: causes, challenges, and opportunities

In its second edition, the Conference, organized by CAF, Development Bank of Latin America jointly with the Latin America Center at Oxford University, is part of the collaboration program between both institutions that promote the generation and dissemination of knowledge regarding Latin America. 

With respect to the central theme of the Conference, Enrique Garcia, CAF's Executive President, expressed "The growth of the middle class in the region may have a decisive impact on the social and productive transformation of the countries, allowing for a reduction of the inequality levels and increasing and consolidating development in Latin America". 

The program of the II CAF-Oxford Conference, which will be held at the Nissan Lecture Theatre, St Antony's College, will make an in-depth analysis of the region's middle class, its vulnerability, social mobility, the need for educational reforms, and insecurity, among others. 

Key questions will be addressed in this respect, such as: What is the difference between this middle class and other segments of society? How irreversible is the rise of this new social group? What is the impact that the middle sectors can generate on economic development and as drivers of social change?  

The inaugural session will include the participation of Enrique Garcia, CAF's Executive President, Andrew Hamilton, Vice-President of Oxford University, and Margaret MacMillan, Warden of St Antony's College. Speakers in the plenaries will be Guillermo Perry, former Minister of Finance of Colombia and teacher at the Universidad de los Andes, and Miguel Castilla, former Minister of Finance of Peru. Moderating and presentations will be in charge of Oxford academics (United Kingdom), CEBRAP (Brazil), Brookings Institution (United States), Instituto Prisma (Bolivia), CESIC (Spain), University of Costa Rica, and representatives of international organizations (CAF, World Bank, OECD), among others.
