June 04, 2013
The Panama Metro consolidated as the most important civil work in the Panamanian capital, and will incorporate and additional 1,500 workers to the 4,400 that already work there. It will allow citizens to travel from one extreme to the other in 23 minutes.
Line 1 is mainly designed in a North-South direction, with an approximate length of 13.7 kilometers. It joins the National Bus Terminal in Albrook, with the Los Andes Shopping Mall in the North of the Metropolitan Area. With an 85% advance, Line 1 of the Metro is a reality for the inhabitants of the city.
The Metro is a Central Government project, led by the Secretaría del Metro de Panamá (Panama Metro Secretariat) to provide a comprehensive solution to the urban transportation problem, one of the main challenges of the city.
With the financing of CAF - Latin American Development Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the State of Panama, the Metro will provide savings in travelling times and benefits for the users of other modes of public transportation. As a result of the lower congestion in the main road corridors, the public and private transportation vehicles will have a lower wear, and accidents will be reduced.
This type of mass urban transportation project has an effect on the decrease of contaminating gas emissions, as by using electricity, pollution will be avoided and the environmental conditions of the city will improve.
