CAF and LACNIC will present the results of the first research on IPv6 in the region on March 3rd, at the Casa de Internet de Latinoamérica y el Caribe (Montevideo), without which the quality of service will deteriorate, and it is impossible for the Internet of Things (IoT) to fully function
March 01, 2016
The growth of the Internet has reached a virtual depletion. The IPv6 represents the only alternative for the network of networks to continue developing safely and in a stable manner.
CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, and LACNIC, carried put the first study regarding this matter in the region, called "Despliegue de IPv6 para el desarrollo socio económico en América Latina y el Caribe" (Implementation of IPv6 for the socio-economic development of Latin America and the Caribbean). The research warns that Latin America has a very low implementation of IPv6. Only four countries presented a traffic exceeding 1 percent (Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru), which should change substantially to ensure the development of quality Internet.
An encouraging fact is the 30 percent of the Internet organizations intend to implement IPv6 in 2016.
The importance of the IPv6 version is that only the services under this protocol have the conditions required by the Internet of Things (IoT), allowing to extend internet to all user appliances, the systems, and practically anything that benefits form the network's connectivity.
The research, which will last 10 months and gathers data from the 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean that are members of LANIC, and of the best practices worldwide, for the first time shows indicators of the implementation of IPv6 in 33 countries of the region, partial indicators of the Internet's value chain, and an economic impact analysis. In addition, the report develops an economic model for the ISP and implementation recommendations for governments, universities, companies, and other interested parties.
The presentation of the study will beat the Casa de Internet de Latinoamérica y el Caribe (Montevideo) starting at 8.30 on Thursday, March 3rd.
