The I Edition of the Governance, Political Management, and Public Management Program ended successfully with a reflection on the current situation of the public institutional framework of Brazil, and the different proposals to improve the governance context in that country. The Program was executed by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV, for its acronym in Spanish) with the support of CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, and the academic advice of the Graduate School of Political Management of the George Washington University (GSPM - GWU).
For six months, more than 100 participants, mostly staff from different public institutions in Brazil, were trained on subjects related to public management, democratic governance, and political communication, leadership, and negotiations.
For Christian Asinelli, CAF's Director of Institutional Development, guaranteeing the promotion of this type of public training tools is essential to support the change processes that different countries of Latin America are undergoing. Asinelli stated, "We cannot adapt the capacity of our States to the new global dynamic without previously investing in the generation of new knowledge regarding governance and political management. For this, it is essential to develop new tools for public training".
The closing event included the participation of Victor Rico, CAF's Director Representative in Brazil, who highlighted the need to strengthen this type of initiatives and put them at the disposal of a larger number of Brazilians. In this respect, the support of the Representation Office in Brazil has been essential to consolidate the cooperation alliance with the Getulio Vargas Foundation, and will be decisive in the process to expand the Program.
An opportunity to promote academic integration in Latin America
As part of the on-site activities of the program, the training course included a master conference about the challenges that the region will face regarding public policies. The speaker was Raúl Velásquez, Master in Public Policies from Oxford University, amd PhD in Political Studies from the same university and coordinator of the Governance, Political Management, and Public Management of the Universidad del Rosario, in Colombia.
This working session was framed within the academic integration process that CAF has been promoting throughout the region, by offering different cooperative working tools for the executing organizations in their training courses.
This is the first time that CAF's Governance, Political Management, and Public Management Program is executed in Brazil, and after the results of this experience it will probably continue this year. Since 2001, the Program has been implemented in 11 countries of Latin America, training more than 19,800 participants.
