May 12, 2003

The Andean Development Corporation (CAF) and Grupo de Diarios de America (GDA) held a seminar on "Handling Information in Latin America" with the participation of editors and directors from the member newspapers of the GDA. The event was held in Miami on May 8 and 9 with logistical support from the University of Miami and the Inter-American Press Society (IAPA).

The seminar, which was part of the activities that the CAF is promoting on governance and journalism training in the region, led to a productive exchange of ideas between journalists and an important group of special guests who included Elvira Lupo from the CAF; Tim Carrington, World Bank; Diego Cardona, professor from the El Rosario University, Bogota; and Sally Hughes, Leonardo Ferreira and Max Castro, teachers from the University de Miami.

The debates focused on issues such as the media and economic development; changes in political power in Latin America; economic processes, debt and free trade; freedom and responsibility of the media; governance and reform, and the challenges of Latin American journalism.
