Support for Ecuadorian electricity sector

March 27, 1992

(Caracas, March 27, 1992).- A US$15 million line of credit for the Ecuadorian government was today approved in Caracas.

The executing agency of this line of credit for foreign trade operations is the Ecuadorian Electrification Institute (INECEL). The operation will finance acquisition of equipment of British and Italian origin for overhaul the Esmeraldas thermoelectric plant and the thermal generators.

CAF President & CEO Enrique García said Ecuador is facing a serious electricity deficit due to lack of rain caused by the El Niño atmospheric phenomena.

He added this deficit was around 200 MW in the generation phase, figure which increases as demand grows.

Overhaul of generating capacity is one of the priority tasks of the Ecuadorian government. It is calculated that once the thermal generators are fully operational, the system will have an additional 257 MW by the end of this year.
