To achieve effective planning, zoning, and management of the territory, it is necessary to have a solid cartography base that allows for timely responses to the needs of the users at regional and municipal levels. In this respect, CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, granted a technical cooperation loan to the Instituto Geografico de Venezuela Simon Bolivar (IGVSB) (Simon Bolivar Geographic Institute of Venezuela) to support in the conceptual design of the project "Generation of the basic cartography in the states north of the Orinoco River (Cartonorte), establishing the technical, methodological, and normative basis that are necessary for an optimal implementation of the project.

Cartonorte will enable efficient and quality generation of basic cartography of the country at a scale of 1:25.000 for 21 states north of the Orinoco River, as a base to implement management plans for the social, economic, and environmental resources of the country, framed within CAF's strategy to promote the development of useful geographic information in the region.

These projects are of interest to CAF as they coordinate and integrate the geographic information that is essential for sustainable development and regional integration, which are promoted by GeoSUR, a regional platform known as the Geospatial Portal of Latin America.
