US$27 million to improve living and health conditions in Guayaquil

(Caracas, June 8, 2007). - To improve the living and health conditions of a population estimated at 172,000, the Andean Development Corporation approved a US$27-million loan for the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil for execution of the North Sector Sewerage Project to be executed for the city government by Empresa Cantonal de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado de Guayaquil (Ecapag).

CAF president & CEO Enrique Garcia said: "This project is part of the CAF strategies with which we support the efforts of regional governments in favor of their inhabitants and - in this specific case – for the benefit of the most vulnerable population of the city." He added: "This is part of the work of supporting Latin American development which the Corporation has been involved in for over 35 years"

With a total cost of US$49.3 million, the project, which is guaranteed by the Republic of Ecuador, comprises construction and optimization of the sewerage network system, impulsion lines and pumping stations, collectors and final outfall to the existing sewage treatment station.

The proposed investment consists of construction of approximately 44,000 new sewerage connections; 565 kilometers of sewage collection network; 10.14 kilometers of exterior collectors and final outfall; and 12 pumping stations of which four will be in the Bastión Popular sector, five in cooperatives, two in Los Vergeles, and a final pumping station which impulses the sewage to the treatment lagoons at Guayacanes-Samanes.
