US$45 million to upgrade drainage in Brazilian municipality

CAF announced funds to support improvements in the quality of life of the inhabitants of Fortaleza, capital of Ceará state in northeast Brazil

(Brasilia, November 10, 2010).- With the aim of improving the quality of life of the population of Fortaleza, Brazil, CAF - Latin American development bank - approved a US$45.1 million loan to implement the Municipal Urban Drainage Program.

"The funds granted will be used to optimize the urban storm water drainage system, environmental recovery and preservation, and reclamation of the river basins of this important Brazilian municipality," CAF President & CEO Enrique García said.

The Program, to be executed by Fortaleza municipality, comprises projects focused on expansion, recovery, and clean-up of the municipal urban storm water drainage network; execution of a plan to upgrade urban roads, including their drainage infrastructure. Another project will improve solid waste collection and another will focus on cleaning and development of three of the lakes located in the municipality.

Of the total cost of US$90.2 million, 50% will come from the CAF loan and the rest from local contributions by the municipality.

El mencionado Programa, a ser ejecutado por el Municipio de Fortaleza, está integrado por proyectos enfocados en la ampliación, recuperación y limpieza de la red municipal urbana de drenaje de aguas pluviales; la ejecución de un plan de mejoramiento de vías urbanas, incluyendo su infraestructura de drenaje; otro para mejorar la recolección de desechos sólidos; y un proyecto enfocado en la limpieza y urbanización de tres de los lagos que existen en el municipio.

El costo total del mismo es de USD 90,2 millones, de los cuales el 50% constituyen el préstamo de la CAF y el 50% restante se hará con aportes locales del Municipio.
