January 24, 2000

(Lima, January 24, 2000). – CAF contributed US$80 million to finance the first five sections of the Ilo-Desaguadero highway, a distance of 197 km from kilometer zero to 235. The public treasury contributed US$63,486,000, bringing the total investment in this phase to US$143,486,000.

As will be recalled, the works of the first stage, corresponding to these first five sections, began on January 24, 1997 and were completed in September 1998. The works of the second stage (sections VI to IX) began on January 9, 1999 and were recently completed.

With this contribution, CAF is backing the Peruvian government’s efforts to maintain the road system, particularly the connection between the Pacific and Atlantic basins, and benefit the inhabitants of the departments of the south of the country, especially Puno and Moquegua, as well as contributing to opening possibilities for trade and closer relations with CAF member countries through their physical integration. Because of these characteristics, the highway is considered a priority integration project in the set of Andean integration projects.
