Enrique Garcia opens Conference on Trade and Development in the Americas

CAF Executive President Enrique García today opened the VIII Annual Conference of the Andean Development Corporation on Trade and Development in the Americas in Washington. The event was organized by the CAF jointly with the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Dialogue.

In his opening address, Enrique García emphasized the importance of the event as a space for reflection on issues of vital importance for Latin America, particularly for the Andean region. The CAF, he said, assumes a proactive role in the task of promoting this reflection by bringing together an outstanding group of key actors responsible for decision-making on economic, political and social issues in our countries.

He said that Latin America must move toward strengthening an Integrated Development Agenda that is capable of reconciling the social, economic and political demands of our peoples with the realities of a highly competitive globalized world; applying fiscal policy as an instrument for strengthening democracy and governance; creating mechanisms for dialogue and confidence; and strengthening mechanisms of participation.

The conference debates will continue tomorrow on issues that include Managing Andean economies: What should be done?; Challenges for democracy; Energy policy in the Andes; Free trade and the Andean region; Latin America and the global economy; and The challenges of China and India.
