"Knowing their limitations during a property diagnostic allowed them to know where the changes had to be made, and how much their land should yield. These contributions motivated other producers that are already seeking to assimilate this methodology and plan for the long-term", said Isabel Andreoli, Director of the Unidad de Montevideo Rural of Montevideo's Administrative Offices.
The reality of farmers is very particular in the department where Uruguay's capital is located. Seventy percent of the producers are families that own an average of 7 hectares of land , while in the rest of the country the average for rural establishments is of 210 hectares.
Taking this reality into account, the experts who worked in the project considered the common characteristics of the small producers in Montevideo. At the same time, they carried out a specific analysis for each family enterprise which was included in the program.
Andreoli stated that, "the producers felt they were receiving the attention they deserved. Now, they have the tools adapted to their needs, and are listened to so the policies can favor their growth and development possibilities".
In this respect, the project contributed to a greater visibility for rural producers in Montevideo, which made it possible for them to be observed in a special way by other State organizations such as the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fishing (MGAP for its acronym in Spanish).
