Winners of The Americas Award for Excellence in Public Service 2009

August 26, 2009

The Americas Award 2009 pays tribute to public officials from national and local governments which have implemented successful programs and best practices in the eight areas of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Americas Award is a joint initiative of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), CIFAL Atlanta, the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) and the Organization of American States (OAS).

Based on the areas of action of the United Nations MDGs, the Jury Committee granted eight awards, using the following evaluation criteria: high levels of performance excellence/improvement demonstrated world class innovation, and maintained the highest ethical standards. Using a point evaluation system, each jury assessed the indicators that showed concrete progress towards the achievement of MDGs. The Jury Committee comprised of representatives of the participating organizations, evaluated more than 140 nominations received from 17 countries in the Americas and the Caribbean and selected the eight winners.

The Awards will be presented at official ceremony to be held at the Georgia Aquarium in the City of Atlanta on August 31. During the ceremony, there will also be a special award to recognize lifetime achievements of public servants. The names of winners have been published on August 11 in the Web pages of CIFAL, CAF and SEDI-OAS.
