The work is located transversely in the San Eduardo hill, with a longitude of 1.3 Km. of tunnel and 2.42 Km. of road, joining the city's southeast and northeast sectors, in addition to becoming a structurer of the main road network.
The tunnels connect the Asad Bucaram, Marta Bucaram, El Bombero, Arosemena and Rodriguez Bonin avenues. Each tunnel has three traffic lanes, each one 3.25 meters in width, separated from each other by a distance of 13.5 meters.
As part of the project, a transport interchanger was built at kilometer 4,5 of the road to the Coast, which connects the tunnels with the Martha Bucaran, Carlos Julio Arosemena and El Bombero avenues (northeast) and with the Barcelona avenue (southwest).
Washington Villacis, a specialist in the CAF-BEDE Unit of the Municipality of Guayaquil, stated that for the construction of the tunnels an advanced technology was used, and explained that the tunnels were provided with equipment to guarantee user security and integrity, allowing for the monitoring of possible incidents and events happening inside the tunnels
The tunnels have 36 video cameras located throughout the structure, reporting statistical information from each tunnel, such as vehicular speed, traffic conditions, and traffic density. In addition, it has a digital sign posting system and three escape galleries located at a distance of 300 meters from each other, emergency parking areas, and emergency telephone booths.
