Research on mobility and urban planning with the use of data

Convocation from April 29 to May 29, 2022

Through the use and valorization of mobility data, CAF—development bank of Latin America—and TUMI—Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative—partnered to carry out the “TUMI Data - Data for sustainable mobility” project, to enable the digital transformation of urban mobility in an environmentally friendly manner, and to create clean, inclusive, sustainable and livable cities.

The challenge of data applied to transport is immense. Approximately 35% of the world’s largest cities and 92% of low- and middle-income cities do not have complete transportation and land usage maps. (World Bank 2021)

Harnessing the power of more accurate data from conceptualization to implementation through collection, planning and monitoring supports transformative change in the transportation sector, thus enabling data-driven decision-making. The constraints related to data can be overcome with the use of satellite images, remote sensing, machine learning and computer vision procedures. These advances in data and technology create new opportunities to work on evaluating investments in large infrastructures and making public policy decisions.

Continuous discoveries and the availability of data through new collection technologies open up a space for innovative research and its applications in the industry’s international development. In this connection, development banks and cooperation agencies began to identify these new ways of addressing public policy challenges in a systematic, economic and transparent manner.
