CAF co-sponsors debate on the ethical challenges of development
Over 1,700 participants will debate the ethical values necessary for development
The Andean Development Corporation, CAF, is co-sponsoring the international seminar The Ethical Challenges of Development, organized jointly with the IDB, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and the governments of France and Norway. The event takes place in the Argentine capital on September 5 and 6.
Maria Teresa Szauer, CAF director of sustainable development, will participate with a paper on Sustainable Development and Culture, which deals with the importance of the values of social capital and culture for sustainable development, as well as the Corporation’s initiatives in this area. The CAF financed the event through a non-reimbursable technical cooperation grant for US$50,000.
The congress will be opened by Enrique Iglesias, president of the IDB in the presence of representatives from 87 universities. The speakers are Bernardo Kliksberg, coordinator of the Inter-American Initiative on Social Capital, Ethics and Development, of the IDB; Amartya Sen, Nobel laureate in economics, who will speak by videoconference; and the French philosopher Edgar Morin, along with other distinguished figures from politics, economics, philosophy and academia. All of them will discuss the innovative aspects of ethics in promoting responsible and sustainable development.
Over 1,700 people are expected to attend the congress in the School of Economics of the UDA with no charge for admission. The sessions in the form of workshops will produce guides and specific recommendations on how to instill ethical values and create social capital in economists, managers, accountants, administrators and other professionals working in development.
