New graduates in governance and political management
December 13, 2007
(La Paz, December 13, 2007).- The Andean Development
Corporation, as part of the work of its Governance and Technical
Cooperation Department (DGCT), today closed the "VII Governance and
Political Management Program." In Bolivia this program is executed
in association with Del Valle University (UNIVALLE) and The George
Washington University Graduate School (GSPM-GWU).
The objective is to strengthen the capacities of institutions to manage complex problems in the midst of structural changes. The program is targeted at public authorities and their support teams with a view to ensuring that transformation processes are implemented with low levels of conflict. The program is currently under way in Bolivia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Mexico.
The closing ceremony was held in the presence of Elvira Lupo, CAF director of governance and technical cooperation; Dr. Luís Raúl Matos, coordinator of the Political Management Graduate Program of The George Washington University; and the vice rector of Univalle, Karla Abuday.
So far the program has trained mayors, councilors, heads of vigilance committees, departmental councilors, municipal technical teams, politicians and leaders of organizations that work with local governments on specific issues relevant to municipalities, in support of government actions.
Elvira Lupo said, "The Governance and Political Management Program has achieved a total of 5,140 graduates since its start in Bolivia in 2001. Based on its success, CAF decided to expand the program to the other shareholder countries in an effort to achieve the participation of all actors in civil society and municipal leaders and their support teams, considering that the formation of a critical mass of actors with a sense of strategy and capacity to resolve conflicts and generate consensus strengthens institutional development and improves governance in the countries and in their communities."
The objective is to take future social and political leaders through training which inculcates the importance of recognizing and strengthening an integrated view of political, economic and social management combined with a communication strategy and effective leadership.
