(Lima, June 13, 2011).- To contribute to capacity building
among authorities and officials from local, regional and national
governments with a view to achieving high levels of democratic
governance in the country, the IX Governance and Political
Management Program opened today in seven venues. The Program is
promoted by CAF - Latin American development bank, George
Washington University (GWU), and Master's in Political Science of
the Catholic Pontifical Universidad of Peru (PUCP).
The ceremony was attended by Eleonora Silva Pardo, CAF director representative in Peru; Carlos Alza, professor at the School of Government and Public Policy of the Catholic Pontifical Universidad of Peru; Ismael Muñoz, coordinator of the Governance and Political Management Program in Peru; along with Waldo Mendoza, professor and head of PUCP economics department, who gave the presentation "The Peruvian economy in perspective: reality and challenges for economic policy and governance."
Recalling that the CAF mission is to promote sustainable development and regional integration, Silva Pardo said the multilateral organization also aimed to strengthen democratic governance in member countries. As a result, the program has been in place since 2001 in partnership with George Washington University and local universities in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Panama, and Venezuela.
The program gives guidance to future social and political actors by means of appropriate training, impressing the importance of recognizing and strengthening an integrated view of political, economic and social management, strategic communication and effective leadership.
Silva Pardo said that as the critical mass of actors with capacity to resolve conflicts and build consensus and institutional development grows, the level of governance in the countries will rise, the CAF representative added.
In this respect, she welcomed the launch of the IX Governance and Political Management Program in Peru with 550 participants - including officials from local and regional governments and public and private sector entities - in Arequipa, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huancayo, Lima, Tarapoto, and Trujillo.
