CAF supports Panama City and Bay cleanup project

(Panama, Nov. 8, 2012).- CAF –development bank of Latin America– announced the approval of $176 million in funding for the Panama City and Bay Cleanup project implemented by the Panamanian government in response to the city’s rapid development in the last few decades, which has overwhelmed the sewer system and polluted the Bay of Panama.

CAF President Enrique García highlighted the project’s positive impact, as it seeks the restoration of sanitary and environmental conditions in the metropolitan area and the elimination of pollution caused by untreated sewage in urban rivers and in coastal areas of the Bay of Panama, which translates into improvements in the health, environment and quality of life of the population.

Mr. García stressed the project’s high social content, adding that “it has become an international benchmark for comprehensive plans for wastewater treatment in Latin America.”

Specifically, Phase 2 includes additional construction work at the wastewater treatment plant, the interceptor tunnel and the interconnection system, expanding the scope of ongoing investments and ensuring an adequate interconnection in the city’s drainage system, as well as the building of a second module at the wastewater treatment plant.
