Ninety-five percent punctuality in transportation
The entry into operation of the first section of the Lima Metro has reduced travelling times for about 500 thousand passengers that travel the North-South axis. This means of transportation complies with the schedule and stimulates the city's mobility.
Oswaldo Plasencia, Executive Director of theAutoridad Autonoma del Tren Electrico(Autonomous Authority of the Electric Train) (AATE, for its acronym in Spanish), explains: "To date, more than 20 million passengers have been transported by a service with a level of punctuality that is higher than 95 percent. This helps users program their daily activities knowing that their trip is completely predictable".
Lima and Callao constitute a great city of 2,812 km2, with more than 13 million daily trips using public transportation. To improve mobility, the city started the construction of the Metro, a project financed by CAF with USD 300 million.
Previously, the travelling time for users demanded 2.5 hours, which have been reduced to only 30 minutes. Plascencia pointed out that "this constitutes a significant qualitative leap in the citizens' quality of life ".
The Metro is not restricted to transportation. It is being used as an element to structure the city, generating expectations for the modification of all the public and private spaces where it is being developed.
"Undoubtedly this implies a revolution of the city, significantly improving the quality of life for all the citizens".
