Transportation Offers in Latin America
Three categories define the passenger transportation infrastructure: the road system, intersections, and circulation preferences.
The urban mobility study carried out in 15 Latin American cities concludes that the supply of roadways for the transportation of people is quite wide.
The document Observatorio de Movilidad Urbana para América Latina (Urban Mobility Observatory for Latin America) shows that with respect to the road system and traffic lights, the group of metropolitan areas include 245 thousand kilometers of roads available for circulation, and 32,600 intersection with traffic lights.
Even though the road structure is extensive, there is a challenge to improve its quality so it may operate in optimal conditions. For this to happen, it is necessary to increase the budgets allocated to the maintenance and construction of new works.
With respect to preferential routes for the circulation of pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation vehicles, there are still efforts to be made.
In most metropolitan areas, the roads which prioritize the circulation of buses are few, with only 904 kilometers out of the 42,000 kms. used by public transportation. However, Bogota stands out for having a large number of roads adapted to buses.
The cities that assign the greatest priority to pedestrians and cyclists are Bogota, Curitiba and Leon.
