43% more coverage for the sewage system in Maldonado
There is an ongoing investment plan for the improvement of the sanitary conditions of one of the main tourist areas in Uruguay. The goal is to increase the coverage of the sewage network by ninety-five percent
With CAF'ssupport, Obras Sanitarias del Estado is processing an investment plan as part of a project for the treatment and final disposal of residues, which will enable the improvement of sanitary and environmental conditions of the city of Maldonado and Punta del Este.
The city of Punta del Este is the largest tourist destination in Uruguay. It is located 135 kilometers from Montevideo, extending throughout a 70-kilometer coastline which includes the capital of the department of Maldonado.
The implementation of the project requires an investment of USD 92.5 million. Almost half of that amount (USD 45 million) corresponds to a loan granted by CAF.
The purpose of the investment is to increase the coverage of the sewage system from 53% to 95% of the population, which is estimated to reach 417 thousand inhabitants by 2035.
These works will improve the sanitary infrastructure in order to respond to the increasing tourist demand, as well as to improve the quality of the environment for the inhabitants of Maldonado and neighboring populations.
