International terminal receives more than 20 million passengers
Colombian air transportation grew by 19.6 percent during the first semester of 2013 after the entry into operations of the new international terminal of the El Dorado International Airport
The loan granted by CAF - Latin American Development Bank - for the first time to Opaín - represents not only the modernization and expansion of one of the greatest infrastructure works, but also the expansion of logistic processes, greater passenger mobility, and increases in the variety and frequency of international routes.
During the first semester of 2013, the total number of passengers reached 2.2 million more than during the same period in 2012, according to official figures, representing an increase of 19.6 percent. That is, during 2012 a little over 11 million people travelled, and this year the number reached close to 13 and a half million.
At the same time, from and toward other countries, there was a 13.1 percent increase in the number of passengers.Close to 4.2 million people enjoyed the services offered by the new building.
The international terminal, with five floors, has 45 emigration and immigration posts, with state of the art suitcase transportation bands, taxiways, passenger terminals and a six lane viaduct.
The work has enabled an increase in the country's competitiveness, focused on marketing products abroad, which has already opened doors to hundreds of entrepreneurs. This intervention has also enabled the registration of a greater variety and frequency of international routes, which is a driver of local, national, and international sustainable development.
The new terminal is considered as one of the most modern and renewed airport infrastructure works in the Region. It will be fully operational next October, as the connectivity platform for America.
