CAF supports socio-environmental program in the Igarapes of Manaus
The multilateral organization signed a loan contract with the Government of the State of The Amazon and the General Attorney´s Office of the National Treasury for up to USD 54.5 million to finance the initiative
CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, signed a loan contract with the Government of the State of The Amazon and the General Attorney´s Office of the National Treasury for up to USD 52.5 million to finance the socio-environmental program of the Igarapes of Manaus, guaranteed by the Federative Republic of Brazil.
The total cost reaches USD 75 million of which USD 52.5 million (70 percent) will be financed by the Latin American institution, and USD 22.5 million (30 percent) by the local counterpart. The program´s goal is to contribute to the solution of the socio-environmental and urban problems that affect the population of Manaus.
This initiative will directly benefit 10 thousand people, of which 3,200 will need to be relocated, 6,500 will remain in their homes, and more than 1,000 will benefit indirectly.
The agreement was signed by Víctor Rico Frontaura, CAF´s Director Representative in Brazil, Afonso Lobo Moraes, Finance Secretary of State, and Fabiola Inez Guedes de Castro Saldanh, Representative of the Attorney´s Office of the National Treasury.
The socio-environmental program of the Igarapes of Manaus is located along the direct area of influence of the Igarapes of Bindá, SESC, Quarenta (SHARP Community) and Cachoeirinha (San Sebastian Community) in the city of Manaus. The implementation includes the recovery of the drainage function and of the environmental quality of the igapares; the urban planning in high risk areas due to flooding and precarious homes; the implementation of recreational and social gathering areas; the improvement of the road system, water and basic sanitation services in the areas of intervention, as well as improvements in the operating and management capacities of the organizations that are related to the implementation and maintenance of the initiative.
