Public safety, a fundamental element for the wellbeing of Latin Americans
CAF convened specialists to present the 2014 Economic and Development Report (RED, for its Spanish acronym) "For a safer Latin America: a perspective to prevent and control crime". This publication suggests a comprehensive approach to plan, design, and implement effective interventions to fight crime in the region
"Additionally, in this process to generate statistics, design, implementation, and evaluation of policies, it is very relevant to strengthen the institutional capacities of governments. These capacities do not appear from a vacuum, but from political decisions to prioritize these subjects, which depend on the citizens, through their votes and participation to pressure their representatives. , with incentives and resources for effective action", she concluded.
Lucila Berniell, CAF Research Economist, explained the details of the 2014 RED study; Commentaries were in charge of Gino Costa, President of Ciudad Nuestra; Patricia Zarate, Researcher at the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos (Peruvian Research Institute); and Carolina Gibu, Executive Director of Ciudadanos al Dia.
- These specialists coincide in highlighting the research carried out by CAF's Research Unit, an institution that generates research and knowledge regarding the problems faced by our countries in order to based on their own policies that are being implemented.

Finally, they expressed their assurance that the 2014 RED presentation will be an input to start a constructive debate, and will inspire policy initiatives that promote safer countries with greater opportunities for the development of the population.
