With the objective of favoring and improving the capacities of health professionals, the SOS Telemedicine Program of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), in alliance with CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, offers online courses, a teaching and learning alternative starting on November 20th, free of charge, and for all health professionals.
SOS Telemedicine online courses is an academic initiative that emerged to train health personnel with contents that are useful and pertinent, through online free courses for Spanish speaking audiences that have access to internet. The training includes a total of 11 modules that are sponsored by teachers and graduates from different post-graduate programs at the Faculty of Medicine of the UCV. The subject of the already available courses is maternal-infant health, which includes different learning resources about the most relevant subjects in each matter for all those taking the course. Each module will be evaluated to obtain a certificate, which will be issued by the SOS Telemedicine Program of the Faculty of Medicine of the UCV.
For the project's Director, Dr. Héctor Arrechedera: "The SOS Telemedicine program offers a platform of Online Courses, coordinated by renowned specialists, based on video classes and video tutorials, and aimed at primary care health personnel in our region, to improve their skills, update their knowledge, work on prevention, and increase their power to solve problems, thus benefitting their patients".
José Carrera, Vice President for Social Development at CAF, commented, "CAF seeks to improve the quality of life of Latin America's inhabitants. SOS Telemedicine is a tool to reach remote places and offer a more adequate and updated service to those populations, having a positive influence on their wellbeing. These courses are an initiative that may be copied throughout the region".
SOS Telemedicine is a program that includes other training and education resources both for health professionals as well as for the community in general, such as tutorials and thematic conferences, which are all available through: http://sostelemedicina.ucv.ve
The training and education of health professionals with updated contents are some of the objectives of the initiative, which seeks to complement classroom education to improve skills, develop networking, and optimize services in remote health centers.
