Water + Work: a double impact project
To date, the Water + Work project has benefited 21,895 individuals and contributed to the installation of 18,000 meters of pipes and 1,700 household connections in Buenos Aires
The Water + Work project was developed with the objective of reducing the social inclusion generated by the lack of coverage of water and sanitation services, and by the high unemployment rates in the municipalities of La Matanza and Almirante Brown, in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires.
Jointly developed by Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos, S.A. (AySA) and CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, the initiative implies coordination between the community, AySA, the cooperatives, and the municipalities, and aims at generating benefits through the involvement and direct participation of the communities.
The municipality identifies the priority works, and with the support of AySA, and contracts the working cooperatives of the same communities for the execution, in a practice that assumes a double responsibility: prioritize the areas to expand, and manage the funds received from AySA.
The Leopoldo Marecha Institute is the agent in charge of providing training to the workers in the following areas:
- Professional training in water networks and sewages, electricity, electro-mechanical, and automatism.
- Practical training through simulation of real situations, such as the construction of water networks or sewages in the training center.
- Entrepreneurial training: training in management and to strengthen the cooperative unit.
The participants receive a salary while they are in training, and those who finish successfully, receive a certificate with official public validity approved by the Ministry of Education.
This project is framed within the PASOS program for social inclusion, an initiative created by CAF, Development Bank of Latin America.
