How to increase international patents coming from Colombia
With the objective of increasing the number of international patents coming from Colombia, CAF carried out the First Intensive Workshop on Patents in Medellin, between May 31st and June 5th.
The event, supported by Tecnnova and Ruta N, obtained 38 technological concepts that have possibilities of being patentable (in 2014, the total number of applications of Colombian patents in the United States was 82).
During the event, two main modules were worked on. The first, including the participation of 65 representatives from the most important institutions and universities of Antioquia, consisted of an open workshop which showed the Regional Initiative for the Development of Patents Program, as well as the CAF methodology for an accelerated development of patents.
The second module, developed between June 1 and 5, included the participation of 7 universities of Antioquia, as well as institutions specialized in technological transfer. The workshop applied the CAF technology for the accelerated development of patents, which consists in providing training for the conceptualization of ideas, accelerated search of prior art, and development of the creative potential to achieve the writing of a patent in the international format in a short period of time.
Alvaro Atilano, Coordinator of the program Regional Patents Initiative, explained, "To conceptualize it is only necessary to dream. To write an idea on a piece of paper, search for prior art (see if the idea is new) and the conceptualization process may take only one day. It is necessary to demystify the issue of patents and create new markets that enable the region to export high technology and receive income through the derived royalties".
