CAF will present a study about broadband penetrationin Latin America at a seminar on intelligent cities
The presentation of the study regarding connectivity in the continent will be one of the many attractions of the Sixth Week of Green Norms, to be held in Montevideo between Monday, September 5th, and Friday, September 9th, 2016. The meeting will be useful as a framework for the XVII Ibero-American Meeting of Digital Cities, organized by the International Telecommunications Union (UIT, for its acronym in Spanish), the City Council of Montevideo (IM, for its acronym in Spanish), The Inter-American Association of Telecommunications Companies (ASIET, for its acronym in Spanish), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the Regional Center of the Basel Convention for the South American Region (CRBAS, for its acronym in Spanish)
The presentation of a study carried out by CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, with the collaboration of the consulting company Analysys Mason, regarding the expansion of connectivity in the continent by eliminating the barriers on the deployment of mobile broadband at a sub-national level, will be one of the main topics at the Sixth Week of Green Norms to be held in Montevideo between Monday, September 5th, and Friday, September 9th, 2016.
The results of the study, which establishes the inequalities in the penetration rates between countries and regions, both within the continent as well as in relation to Europe, will be the basis of the presentation by Joan Obradors, Director for Europe and partner at Analysys Mason, in charge of the study made jointly with CAF. The presentation will include a series of proposals to implement actions at an institutional, national, and sub-national level, with the objective of reducing the existing barriers and facilitating the deployment of mobile communications for broadband in Latin America,
The Sixth Week of Green Norms es co-organized by the International Telecommunications Union (UIT, for its acronym in Spanish), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Regional Center of the Basel Convention for the South American Region (CRBAS, for its acronym in Spanish), CAF, the City Council of Montevideo (IM, for its acronym in Spanish), and the Inter-American Association of Telecommunications Companies (ASIET, for its acronym in Spanish).
Gladis Genua, CAF's Director Representative in Uruguay, will be in charge of the opening of the event together with Carolina Cosse, Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining; the Mayor of Montevideo, Daniel Martínez; and the General Undersecretary of the UIT, Malcolm Johnson.
During the week, it will be possible to assist to the presentations of renowned international and national personalities such as the Vice-Minister of the Environment of Lithuania, Daiva Matoniene; the Mayor of Asuncion, Paraguay, Mario Ferreiro; the Mayor of Canelones, Yamandú Orsi; the Mayor of Santiago, Chile, Claudio Orrego; the President of the International Society "Mujeres transformando las Ciudades" (Women Transforming Cities), Ellen Woodsworth; the Secretary for ICT at the Ministry of Communications of Argentina,Héctor Huici; the Undersecretaryof Planning of the Secretariat of Information and Communications Technology at the Ministry of Communications, Hugo Miguel; David Hahm, Director of the WeGO Program; Hideyuki Kanemitsu, Vice-president of the Strategic Corporate Unit for the Environment at Fujitsu; the Undersecretary of Industry, Guillermo Moncecchi; the President of the Ceibal Plan (One Laptop per Child), Miguel Brechner; The Secretary General of the Mayor's Office of Montevideo, Fernando Nopitsch; the Director of Montevideo Ciudad Inteligente (Montevideo Intelligent City), Cristina Zubillaga; the Representative of the National Research and Innovation Agency (ANII, for its acronym in Spanish), Sara Goldberg; the President of the Chamber for Uruguay's Digital Economy (CEDU, for its acronym in Spanish), Marcelo Montado; and the President of Antel, Andrés Tolosa.
The XVII Ibero-American Meeting of Digital Cities will take place within the framework of this event, with the presentation of the "ASIET Ciudades Digitales 2016" (ASIET Intelligent Cities 2016) awards to the mayors whose governments have offered more intelligent solutions to solve the problems of their respective cities. This is the greatest Spanish speaking contest for urban development and it is an opportunity to present diverse initiatives and exchange ideas for innovating and efficient development in the provision of services.
The opening of this second forum, included in the first, will be in charge of ASIET's Executive Director, Pablo Bello; the President of Ursec, Gabriel Lombide; the General Undersecretary of UIT, Malcolm Johnson, and the Deputy Executive Secretary of ECLAC, Antonio Prado. Following this, the first session of the forum, entitled "Construyendo ciudades sostenibles e inteligentes en América Latina" (Building sustainable and intelligent cities in Latin America) will present the study carried out by CAF.
